Laura and I met in 1984 while working at E. F. Hutton, in Columbus, Ohio. We fell madly in love and were married in 1986. After figuring out that the ups and downs of the stock market weren’t for us, Mike went back to The Ohio State University and got two degrees in 2 years and 9 months. Ford Motor Company took a chance on us! and moved us from Columbus, to Detroit, then to Minneapolis, Mn. After our second child was born, we decided that the corporate ladder wasn’t our thing, either. We left Ford corporate, for a job with a private dealership in Casper, Wyoming that would allow more home-time (like…everynight!), and allow us to raise our beautiful kids, Rachel and Joe. After 20 years of building some great teams, and helping the dealership expand to 3 stores, we decided it was time to find a simpler, less stressful life.
We started researching areas with nicer climates and decided on Belize for many reasons. Because Belize is a former British colony, the country is English speaking. The monetary and legal systems closely parallel that of the US, they allow property ownership by non-citizens on the seafront, and the tax structure in the country is welcoming to new businesses and individuals alike. Of course, the tropical weather and crystal clear seas may have helped in the decision as well!!
After traveling the country extensively, we decided on the northeastern island of Ambergris Caye. The island is small enough to offer the simpler life we were looking for, but not so small that daily life could become a chore.
We enjoy cooking (and eating!), reading, diving, sailing, snorkeling, yoga, college and professional sports, and dabbling in the stock market. But most of all, our passion for entertaining, hosting parties and meeting new people has been our inspiration for opening The Twisted Palm Villas.
