Twisted Palm Villas

Finishing is the hardest part-NOW they tell me!

Hello again from sunny San Pedro, Belize!  Another quick update on our small boutique hotel project here on Ambergris Caye.  It’s been busy here and things are coming together.  It’s looking like an opening in mid-March may be in order, however it may be a “soft” opening to get us off on the right foot.  Also keep in mind, we said mid-January in the last blog so be reminded that, Finishing is the Hardest Part!

When we left off, we were getting the pool ready for the finish coat of Diamond-Brite.  Here is the process after the pool shell is completed.  First the tile is set which is a painstaking process, then the structure is cleaned thoroughly.  When it’s ready, all hands are on deck.  When the Diamond-Brite starts, it has to be completed by the end of the day.  We had a rather large “whoops” but, on our 2nd attempt, the guys nailed it.  The whoops was making a bet with Mother Nature on the weather and she won! – but enough of that!!!

Suffice it to say, the pool is filled now and the chemicals are in balance!  We’re all set to sit back, relax and enjoy!  Well NOT QUITE!!

20160104_173544The cabinet work has been under way now for about 6 weeks.  Keep in mind that all the cabinet work is done from raw mahogany and made to fit on the job-site.  Each frame, door, and drawer starts out being a 1 x 6 x 10 and after going through the planer, the table saw, the joiner and router, it turns into cabinet frames, drawers and doors!  I don’t think there are many who would have the appreciation for what goes into each and every closet, kitchen and vanity in this project – but the work is immense.

It’s gratifying to see the progress when we leave every night – but the going is slow and can’t be hurried.  At this time, all the cabinets for the 6 suites are complete and installed.  The finishing crew comes in after this is done and begins the task of finish-sanding and sealing the cabinets in-place.  Two of the units are completed and the other 4 should be done in the next 2 weeks.

20160106_092652The air-conditioning dilemma has been solved and the AC units are all installed and ready for testing.  17 units in all!!!  This is such a relief!

Finally, the painting has started!  The exterior has been primed and first coated.  It won’t be long before the exterior is done and the interior starts!!  Now that we have some color, we’re getting a lot of comments from passers-by – and people seem to really like the colors we picked!

We have a lot to finish before we can open.  We still have cabinets in the last rental (ours), all the plumbing and electrical finish such as installing shower-heads, sink faucets, commodes, etc.  Then installing light fixtures, switches and outlets along with cable TV and internet.  Oh yea, and then the delivery of furniture like couches, lamps, beds, TV’s and appliances can start!

Wish us luck on bringing this project home!  Please stay tuned for more on when we will be open for business!  Thanks for following our progress and please don’t hesitate to comment, like or share our page!

Hello Mike and Laura, aka Twisted Palm Villas! David and Cynthia here, checking in from snowy CT (would rather be at our Casa Cava project, Ambergris Bay, but that’s another story… down the road!). Glad to see your project is progressing – very nicely, however painfully slow it may seem from your end. It looks great! Wishing you luck in not only “bringing this project home”, but also in your future enjoyment of it. Can’t wait to be one of your visitors who you welcome on arrival day! Best of luck. Will stay in touch. Warm Regards, David.

Great hearing from you guys! Can you tell from how quick the blogs have become that we are getting down to the final details? Seems like so much to report in so little time. Every day we leave the site seeing great progress, but there’s always more to do the next day when we get there! Seems like it keeps growing and growing! When your project gets underway, you’ll have friends here! If you need anything here – don’t hesitate to ask – just be patient on a response!!! Looking forward to seeing you and Cynthia again soon!

Mike & Laura – I am truly impressed with the progress and how awesome the hotel looks! You two are ones for the ages! I cannot wait to visit and see the place in person. One of my best buds is hooked on your site and loves the detailed updates. He wants to come down with us when we can arrange it. I also gave your site to another buddy who is going to check it out. He and his fiancée are looking to take a trip this year to The Caribbean so I casually encouraged him your place had it all. I hope he does and you get to meet him!

Thanks Mike, we are getting down to the finish and praying our heart can take it! Easily the most stressful thing we’ve ever done and definitely NOT for the feint of heart! Thanks for recommending us to your friends – that is a tremendous compliment and confidence booster for us!!! Hope all is well with you and that you are planning your trip to Beautiful Belize!
